Minecraft is a game a bit like Lego - except its online. You are free to build and destroy your creations, to the limits of your imagination. But you need to survive and keep save, away from the unfriendly characters ("mobs") and watch out for the "griefers" - some people like to destroy as much as others like to build. Minecraft can become quite territorial! Find a shelter, make alliances, join the multiplayer gaming server for Minecraft (UK server).
Move items from the bottom selection to the top 2 by 2 grid and create other items from your selection. For example, drag a piece of wood across and wooden planks are formed for you to use. Put down four planks, and a crafting table is created - this allows you to craft far more items, eg tools like pickaxes and shovels that help you dig and mine stuff more easily, and more quickly than just by hand.
